Abstract:
In the matter of Singapore v. Tan Koon Swan, a prominent Malaysian businessman, the High Court of Singapore imposed a two year sentence and a fine of $500,000 on the defendant on August 26, 1986, contrary to pleadings of both prosecution and defense for a fine only.  The court also denied bail pending an appeal and ordered Tan to begin his sentence immediately.
