Abstract:

On September 28, 2026, an Italian court convicted three Egyptian security officials of the aggravated kidnapping in 2016 of Giulio Regeni, an Italian PhD student at the University of Cambridge.  The officials—Major Magdi Ibrahim Abdelal Sharif, Colonel Athar Kamel Mohamed Ibrahim, and Colonel Uhsam Helmi—were each sentenced to ten years in prison and ordered to pay damages to Regeni’s family as well as court costs.  A fourth defendant—General Tariq Sabir—was acquitted of all charges and Major Sharif, the only one of the defendants to be fully charged with Regeni’s murder, was acquitted of that charge.
