ICC State Parties Remove the Top Prosecutor Over Sexual Misconduct Allegations

On 24 July 2026, at a special session at United Nations headquarters in New York, the governing body of the International Criminal Court (ICC) decided to remove prosecutor Karim Khan from his position with immediate effect. The decision was made by simple majority during a closed-door vote among the 125-member Assembly of States Parties (ASP) to dismiss Mr. Khan, who Member States had elected to serve a nine-year term as the court’s prosecutor in 2021. Of the 125 member states of the court, 82 voted in favor of Khan’s removal in an ICC meeting in New York while 13 voted against and 15 countries abstained.
