On December 3, 2012, the U.S. Department of State updated the work of the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative (CBSI), whereby the U.S. and Caribbean countries are combating illicit narcotics trade and other transnational crimes that threaten regional security. The cooperation implements the commitment that President Barack Obama made at the Fifth Summit of the Americas in Trinidad and Tobago in April 2009, to strengthen regional security cooperation. CBSI is one aspect in an integrated effort that includes other citizen security initiatives in the hemisphere. The U.S., CARICOM countries, and the Dominican Republic are improving citizen safety in the Caribbean by cooperating to substantially reduce illicit trafficking, increase public safety and security, and promote social justice.[1]
