Abstract:
On September 8, 1994, government ministers from West and East Europe signed a declaration in Berlin, pledging new and strengthened forms of criminal cooperation to combat growing international crime including theft of nuclear fuel, drug trafficking and illegal immigration. The meeting took place between justice and interior ministers from the European Union and their counterparts from six former communist states (e.g., Poland Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania and Bulgaria) as well as four West European countries due to join the EU next January (e.g., Norway, Sweden, Finland and Austria). Officials of the U.S., Canada, Switzerland and Morocco also attended since they have traditionally close links with the EU in anti-crime cooperation...(more)
