Abstract:
On April 16-25, 2002 the United Nations Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice held its eleventh session in Vienna. Delegates reviewed the activities of the U.N. Center for International Crime Prevention (CICP), concentrating on the reform of the criminal justice system, the fight against terrorism, and current international efforts to combat transnational organized crime and corruption, among other issues. The principal theme of the 11th session of the UN Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice was the reform of the criminal justice system: achieving effectiveness and equity. Expert panelists addressed the Commission on various regional approaches with concrete examples from different countries. The delegates focused on three areas: (a) integrated criminal justice reforms, especially emphasizing prosecutors, courts and prison, (b) juvenile justice reform and (c) strengthening international criminal justice cooperation.
