Abstract:
On July 16, 2011, Canada deported to China Lai Changxing, 53, a suspect sought by China for 12 years in a multibillion-dollar smuggling and corruption case. The deportation occurred two days after the visit to Beijing of John Baird, Canada’s new minister of foreign affairs. The deportation removed a barrier to improving bilateral relations between the two nations.
